Bantul Fire Truck Forced to Detour Due to Low Independence Day Arch

A fire truck in Bambanglipuro, Bantul, was forced to take a detour after its path was blocked by a decorative archway erected by residents to celebrate the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. local time as personnel from the Bantul Fire and Rescue Service were travelling to Jogodayoh, Sumbermulyo, to conduct a fire safety socialisation and simulation at a local Islamic boarding school. Kristanto Kurniawan, Head of the Fire and Rescue Division at the Bantul Regional Disaster Management Agency, explained that the archway, built as part of the August festivities, was not high enough for the fire truck to pass under. He noted that the vehicle was not responding to an emergency, which allowed the crew to opt for a 200-metre detour rather than risk damaging the community’s celebratory structure. Despite the non-urgent nature of the call, Kristanto urged the public to ensure that any temporary structures, such as Independence Day arches, are built with a clearance exceeding three metres. He stressed that this precaution is necessary to guarantee unimpeded access for emergency vehicles, ensure public safety, and prevent damage to the decorations themselves.
