Banten to build Greater Jakarta dump
Banten deputy governor Ratu Atut Chosiah announced over the weekend that the province was prepared to lease some land to the Java Waste Management Corporation (JWMC) to develop a waste treatment facility for Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi.
"We are suggesting a location in Bojong Menteng, Jawilan subdistrict in Serang, capital of Banten. The residents there cheered the idea when our assessment team discussed this matter with locals," she was quoted as saying by Antara.
JWMC was searching for a 150-hectare site for a toxic waste treatment facility.
She said that the administration was considering an integrated project with a plan proposed by compost producer PT Global Teknologi to handle both organic waste from Banten and Jakarta provinces.
"We need a bigger dump and better waste treatment because Banten can no longer rely on the Cilowong dump in Taktakan Serang subdistrict," she added.
Head of Banten Development Supervision Agency, Harmin Lanjumin, added that the people produce around 600 tons of garbage per day and it was increasing. "In the next seven years, Cilowong dump will no longer be sufficient ... we need another strategy to deal with our waste problems," he said. --JP
