Banten Police Detain Two More Suspects in Chandra Asri Alkali Factory Project Extortion Case
The Banten Regional Police's General Crime Directorate has detained two additional suspects in the extortion case involving the Chandra Asri Alkali (CAA) factory construction project, which implicates the Cilegon Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) and several civil society organisations.
Head of Sub-Directorate I for State Security at the Banten Regional Police's General Crime Directorate, Inspector Endang Sugiarto, revealed in Serang on Monday that the two detained suspects are Zul Basit (44), chairman of the Banten Industrial and Trade Monitoring NGO (BMPP), and Isbatullah Alibasja (43), deputy chairman of Kadin Cilegon.
"Yes, they have been named as suspects, both of them," said Endang.
He previously stated that the investigation into the extortion of the Rp5 trillion project carried out by Kadin Cilegon and several civil society organisations would proceed to a further stage of inquiry.
"For Kadin, the process has reached stage one at the prosecutor's office. We are still working hard conducting examinations," he said.
He added that there would be surprises in the case. "There will be surprises. They will be announced later," he said.
Regarding the involvement of local police personnel, he confirmed that three members of the local police force had been questioned. However, this was in connection with the extortion case rather than their direct involvement.
"There are local police members. Yes, indeed. Let me explain — there are three local police members: KC Yanmin, Banten Regional Police Intelligence, the Head of Intelligence at Cilegon Police, and the Head of the Intelligence Unit at Ciwandan Sector Police," he said.
He explained that the purpose of the questioning was to confirm that the activities carried out by Kadin were conducted without authorisation.
"The provider confirmed that Kadin's activities were carried out without permission or illegally, as there was no written notification, nor was there any communication to the officers," he said.
Previously, police had named three individuals as suspects: Muhammad Salim (Chairman of Kadin Cilegon), Ismatullah (Head of Division at Kadin Cilegon), and Rufaji Jahuri (Chairman of the Indonesian Fishermen's Association, HNSI).
