Banten Governor Signs MoU with Minister to Strengthen Migrant Worker Protection
Banten Governor Andra Soni has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) Mukhtarudin. The cooperation aims to strengthen protection and enhance the capacity of Indonesian migrant workers from Banten. The signing took place at the Ministry of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI/BP2MI) building in Pancoran, South Jakarta, on Thursday (18/6/2026). The collaboration is part of efforts to build an integrated migrant worker ecosystem through cooperation between the central government, regional governments, industry, and universities. On the same occasion, KP2MI/BP2MI also established partnerships with PT Krakatau Steel (Persero) Tbk and the Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University Alumni Association (IKA Untirta). Banten Governor Andra Soni stated that the cooperation is a strategic step to open wider job opportunities for the people of Banten, while ensuring migrant workers receive adequate training, competency, and protection before working abroad. ‘This MoU is one of the efforts to improve people’s welfare and open opportunities for our citizens to develop and work abroad while still receiving protection from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia,’ said Andra. He affirmed that the Banten Provincial Government is ready to implement the programme optimally as part of the implementation of central government policies in the region. ‘We are very enthusiastic and ready to carry out this programme seriously. We will seriously support the central government in implementing the agreed programmes,’ he said. Meanwhile, Minister of P2MI Mukhtarudin explained that the cooperation is a form of synergy to strengthen the protection of migrant workers from upstream to downstream, including education, training, capacity building, and safe and professional placement. ‘This is a collaboration between the central government, regional governments, university alumni, and the industrial sector. It is part of the implementation of President Prabowo’s directive to strengthen the protection ecosystem for Indonesian migrant workers from upstream to downstream,’ said Minister Mukhtarudin. He added that the government is currently focusing on improving the quality of migrant workers to meet the demand for skilled labour in various countries. ‘In line with the President’s directive, we are strengthening protection while enhancing the capacity of migrant workers to enter the global labour market, particularly as skilled workers in the formal sector,’ he added.
