Jakarta — The Jakarta Provincial Government is targeting the restoration of waste management operations at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Facility (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java, within one week following a landslide that occurred on Sunday, 8 March.

Asep Kuswanto, head of the Jakarta Environmental Services Agency (DLH), stated that teams are currently focused on clearing landslide material and reorganising the affected area in Zone 4A.

“We are targeting waste management operations at TPST Bantargebang to return to normal within one week. Field teams are currently handling landslide material in the waterway around the incident location,” Asep said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He explained that landslide material in the waterway will be relocated to landfill areas, specifically Zone 4 Small and Zone 4 Large. Reorganisation will also be undertaken to ensure the conditions in those zones are safer and better organised.

The Environmental Services Agency is targeting the waterway around the incident location to resume normal flow promptly, thereby preventing water overflow onto roads in the area.

On the operational side, maintenance and tidying of landfill zones continue to minimise landslide risk. This work is focused on Zone 3 Kepala Burung and Zone 4 Large.

Despite recovery efforts, Asep added, waste disposal services for Jakarta continue to operate through three active points: Zones 1, 2, and 5, with a capacity of approximately 4,000 tonnes per day.

“Once the tidying process for Zone 4 Large, which experienced the landslide, is completed, that zone will resume operations with additional service capacity of approximately 1,500 tonnes of waste per day,” he stated.
