The issue of the final dumping place for garbage from Jakarta
in Bantar Gebang, Bekasi, has always been politicized. The
Jakarta administration seems likely to continue using Bantar
Gebang as a final dumping ground.

As a Bekasi resident, I do not agree with allowing the Jakarta
administration to use Bantar Gebang as Bekasi itself also needs a
dump.

While the Bekasi municipal administration receives billions of
rupiah in return for allowing Jakarta to use Bantar Gebang as a
dump, this is not enough to make amends for the pollution caused
by the operation of the dump by the Jakarta administration.
Besides, the roads along which the garbage trucks owned by the
Jakarta administration pass are also affected by the foul smells
and seeping water from the garbage.

The best thing for Bekasi to do so as to keep the municipality
clean and healthy is not to allow the Jakarta administration to
use Bantar Gebang as a dump. However, the Bekasi municipal
administration should not use its veto over Jakarta's use of the
dump as a means of blackmailing the Jakarta administration.
