The Banqiao Dam disaster is a tragic chapter in China’s history, with an estimated 171,000 people losing their lives as a result of the catastrophe. Located in Henan Province, the dam’s failure is often cited as the deadliest structural failure in the country’s history. The disaster began on the night of 8 August 1975, when residents downstream were battling a fierce storm. As the rain persisted and water levels rose, they heard cracking sounds from the dam before it ultimately burst. The collapse unleashed a volume of water equivalent to 280,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools, creating a tidal wave travelling at 50 kilometres per hour that obliterated villages below. The initial breach triggered a domino effect, causing 62 other dams in the region to fail. Of the total fatalities, approximately 26,000 people died directly in the floods, while the remainder succumbed to famine and diseases such as cholera and smallpox in the following days. The Banqiao Dam was originally considered extremely robust, even earning the nickname ‘Iron Dam’ after being reinforced in the 1950s using Soviet specifications. However, hydrologist Chen Xing had previously warned that excessive dam construction in the area was dangerous and recommended 12 sluice gates for Banqiao, but only five were installed. His warnings were ignored. For decades, the Chinese government concealed the scale of the disaster, and most people outside Henan remained unaware of the event until historical records were unsealed in 2005, exactly 30 years after the tragedy.
