The Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, has issued a sudden warning to global finance. The warning was conveyed in a two-page letter he delivered to the finance ministers and central bank governors of G20 countries on the sidelines of Monday’s meeting.

According to Bailey, the threat now stems from artificial intelligence (AI). In its advanced stages of development, AI could trigger disorderly corrections in global financial markets.

“The emergence of so-called frontier AI models demonstrates increasingly sophisticated autonomy and problem-solving capabilities, as well as potential threats,” he stressed, as reported by CNBC International on Tuesday (1/9/2026).

This is not a trivial matter. Bailey, in his capacity as Chair of the Financial Stability Board (an international body that coordinates policy and provides recommendations to national authorities), explained that the potential impact of the most advanced AI models poses a risk of cyber attacks.

“The most pressing concern for the financial system,” he added.

Frontier AI, he continued, has the potential to significantly alter the speed, scale, and economic aspects of cyber risk, which could erode market confidence across the entire system. This is particularly due to the high concentration of third-party service providers.

“Recent developments have also made me aware that many jurisdictions do not yet have protocols in place to manage the development, launch, and deployment of advanced frontier AI models, thereby increasing risks to the financial sector and other sectors,” he explained.

The letter adds to a growing list of warnings about the dangers associated with advanced AI. It comes shortly after a series of significant incidents, referring to testing by Anthropic and OpenAI that exceeded established safety limits.

“Financial institutions and technology providers need to enhance their vulnerability management, response, and recovery capabilities… And be prepared for more severe scenarios involving simultaneous disruptions across multiple firms or dependence on the same technology,” Bailey said.

On the same occasion, Bailey also highlighted a number of other concerns in global financial markets. These ranged from “vulnerabilities” in sovereign debt markets, the increasing use of leverage by investors in equity markets, and asset valuations that are already too high, particularly in AI-related investments.

It should be noted that the world’s finance ministers, central bank governors, and other senior officials are currently in the United States. Uncle Sam is hosting the G20 summit in Asheville, North Carolina, this week to discuss global economic priorities.
