Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Bank Mega Tbk is supporting the implementation of the cross-border QRIS payment system, which can now be used in China to facilitate cross-border transactions. Bank Mega’s President Director, Kostaman Thayib, stated that the expansion of cross-border QRIS usage is expected to enhance transaction convenience for customers operating abroad. “With cross-border QRIS, customers can transact practically, easily, safely, and comfortably while abroad without needing to carry local currency cash,” Kostaman said in his statement from Jakarta on Saturday. The launch of this feature is part of a collaboration between Bank Indonesia (BI), Payment Service Providers (PJP), and Payment System Infrastructure Organisers (PIP) with authorities and payment system organisers in partner countries. Cross-border QRIS is a cross-border digital payment system based on the QR Code Cross-border Payments Linkage, allowing transactions via QR code scanning in partner countries. Previously, the implementation of cross-border QRIS has been connected with several countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea. The expansion to China on 30 April 2026 is part of strengthening the national digital payment ecosystem and global payment system integration. The presence of this feature is considered relevant given that China is one of the world’s economic centres with high digital payment adoption rates. With this service, Kostaman explained that customers can now make payments at merchants in China directly through applications without needing to exchange currencies. In addition to easing transactions for tourists, the cross-border payment system is also expected to support trade activities and expand market access for business actors. He stated that his side will continue to innovate in developing digital financial services to increase customer transaction convenience and efficiency. “Bank Mega is grateful to continue being part of the first-mover member banks in the implementation of cross-border QRIS,” he said.
