Bank Mega CEO Discusses Potential Upgrade to KBMI IV Status
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — PT Bank Mega Tbk (MEGA) has discussed its potential to advance to becoming one of Indonesia’s “big banks”. The mid-tier bank aims to grow in order to join the group of banks based on core capital (KBMI) IV.
Bank Mega’s President Director, Kostaman Thayib, stated that the bank will strive to enhance its balance sheet and profits to meet the KBMI IV criteria, which require core capital above Rp70 trillion.
“Many banks naturally aspire to advance towards KBMI 4. Of course, Bank Mega is working to increase its assets and profitability, so hopefully one day we can reach that level,” Kostaman said when met at the Bank Mega Auditorium on Tuesday (31/3/2026).
He explained that the bank, owned by CT Corpora, currently holds the 19th position among Indonesia’s largest banks by assets. In terms of profitability, Kostaman noted that Bank Mega’s after-tax profit growth ranks 10th in the Indonesian banking industry.
For the full year 2025, Bank Mega’s net profit grew 28% year-on-year to Rp3.36 trillion. Meanwhile, total assets as of the end of last year reached Rp140.83 trillion, up 4% year-on-year from the previous year.
As recorded up to December 2025, Bank Mega’s core capital stood at Rp23.97 trillion.
As is known, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) is encouraging an increase in the number of KBMI IV banks. OJK’s Executive Head of Banking Supervision, Dian Ediana Rae, estimates that two to three banks have the potential to upgrade to big bank status.
“This year, if I estimate, there might be around two or three [banks upgrading to KBMI IV],” Dian said when met at the Supreme Court on Wednesday (25/3/2026).
According to her, several banks have already applied for the upgrade. Dian mentioned that their capital positions are approaching the threshold to meet the criteria for the bank category with core capital above Rp70 trillion.
Currently, there are only four KBMI IV banks in Indonesia, namely three state-owned bank conglomerates: PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BBRI), PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk (BMRI), and PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BBNI), plus one private bank, PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BBCA).
