Bank Mandiri Visits Muara Tawar PLTGU, Supporting Energy Transition and Carbon Market
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Bank Mandiri’s Deputy Director, Henry Panjaitan, visited the Muara Tawar Power Plant Unit (UP) owned by PT PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP) on Friday (10/4/2026), accompanied by PLN NP’s Director of Finance and Risk Management, Teguh Widhi Harsono. This joint visit by management from both parties was conducted to observe the role of the Muara Tawar UP in ensuring the reliability of the electricity system, particularly during peak loads and when supplies of new renewable energy (EBT) fluctuate.
In the context of the energy transition, power plants like the Muara Tawar Combined Cycle Power Plant (PLTGU) are needed to help maintain system stability, thereby allowing the development of EBT to proceed with adequate supporting infrastructure.
“The increase in the share of new renewable energy requires supporting infrastructure capable of maintaining system reliability. In this regard, PLTGU Muara Tawar plays an important role because it can quickly respond to changes in load and fluctuations in electricity supply,” said Henry.
In addition to ensuring the operational reliability of the power plant and optimising energy efficiency, which contributes to emission reductions, this visit is also part of strategic efforts being undertaken. These steps align with Bank Mandiri’s commitment to supporting emission reductions to achieve Net Zero Emission operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030.
One approach being implemented is the carbon offset initiative, including the purchase of verified carbon units. This approach is one of the feasible options to support that target, while also aligning with the direction of regulatory developments and the carbon market in Indonesia.
In January 2025, during the launch of the Indonesia International Carbon Exchange (IDXCarbon), Bank Mandiri purchased 5,000 tCO₂e carbon units from the PLN NP project to convert the Single Cycle Power Plant to Combined Cycle Block 2 at UP Muara Tawar, owned by PLN NP.
This project improves the power plant’s efficiency by recycling previously wasted heat into additional electricity generation. The carbon units from this project have been validated and verified by a third party.
The purchase of these carbon units demonstrates that Bank Mandiri not only supports the energy transition through financing but is also actively involved in IDXCarbon and promotes the carbon market in Indonesia, including the increasingly relevant voluntary carbon market.
The purchase of carbon units from the PLN NP project also reflects Bank Mandiri’s support for emission reduction projects of its major customers. PLN NP (PLN Group) itself is a Corporate Banking 8 Group debtor and a prime client of Bank Mandiri. Thus, Bank Mandiri’s support comes not only in the form of financing but also through involvement in decarbonisation projects run by its major customers.
“Bank Mandiri supports the energy transition not only from the financing side but also through participation in the developing carbon ecosystem in Indonesia. We see this as part of efforts to support national decarbonisation targets in a gradual and measured manner,” said Henry.
