Bank Mandiri Supports MRT Ticket Payments Using Credit Cards
Bank Mandiri has implemented a global Europay, Mastercard, and Visa (EMV) standard contactless payment infrastructure for the Jakarta MRT. This allows the public, including foreign tourists, to pay for MRT journeys using Bank Mandiri contactless credit cards on the Mastercard or Visa networks without needing to purchase a separate ticket or exchange currency.
The implementation is part of the launch of the EMV-based contactless card payment system at MRT Jakarta on Wednesday (29/7/2026), making it the first public transport mode in Indonesia to adopt this global payment standard. The EMV standard has been applied in more than 150 metropolitan cities worldwide, including Singapore, Tokyo, London, Hong Kong, and Bangkok, to provide a more practical, secure, and integrated travel experience for public transport users.
In this implementation, Bank Mandiri built and operates the acquiring infrastructure that allows all contactless gates at MRT Jakarta stations to process contactless credit card transactions on the Visa and Mastercard networks, whether issued by domestic or foreign banks, as long as the card is equipped with a contactless or payWave feature.
Bank Mandiri Vice President Director Henry Panjaitan stated that the implementation of EMV-based payments at MRT Jakarta is part of the company’s efforts to expand the use of the digital payment ecosystem in various aspects of public life, including the public transport sector. “Bank Mandiri is proud to support MRT Jakarta and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government in delivering public transport services that are increasingly modern and of international standard. This EMV-based payment implementation is part of the company’s commitment to providing digital payment solutions that are faster, easier, and more secure to meet the needs of the public in various activities, including urban mobility,” Henry said in Jakarta on Wednesday (29/7/2026).
The presence of this EMV-based contactless payment service allows the public to travel on the MRT Jakarta by simply tapping a physical Mastercard or Visa credit card equipped with a contactless or payWave feature on the contactless gate when tapping in and out. For Bank Mandiri customers using the Livin’ by Mandiri application on an NFC-enabled Android device, payments can also be made via the Tap to Pay feature using a Mandiri Credit Card as the source of funds without needing to log into the application. The transaction value is automatically adjusted based on the travel fare without requiring a prepaid balance, top-up, or ticket purchase at the counter.
The implementation of contactless payment services at MRT Jakarta further strengthens Bank Mandiri’s growing digital payment ecosystem. As of June 2026, Bank Mandiri recorded 2.2 million active Mastercard and Visa network credit cards in circulation, with credit card transaction volume reaching Rp43 trillion, growing 22 percent year-on-year (YoY).
In line with the launch of the MRT ticket payment service using contactless cards, Bank Mandiri is presenting a 50% Cashback Programme as a form of appreciation to customers who make transactions using Mandiri Credit Cards at MRT Jakarta. This programme is valid at all MRT Jakarta stations equipped with contactless gates from 29 July to 31 August 2026, with a cashback of 50 percent of the transaction value and a maximum cashback of Rp5,000 per transaction.
Meanwhile, President Director of PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) Tuhiyat said the implementation of ticket payments using EMV-based contactless credit cards is expected to further enhance customer comfort while supporting Jakarta’s transformation into a global city. The presence of this global EMV-based payment method is expected to be a strategic complement to this growth while strengthening Jakarta’s position as a global city with a modern, safe, and integrated mobility system. “Through this initiative, the city of Jakarta is now on par with more than 150 metropolitan cities worldwide, such as Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong, London, New York City, Beijing, Shanghai, and Bangkok, which have adopted EMV-based contactless payment systems in their public transport services,” said Tuhiyat.
Going forward, Bank Mandiri will continue to develop its payment infrastructure capabilities and expand collaboration with various public transport operators to deliver services that are increasingly inclusive, efficient, and of international standard. This step is part of the company’s commitment to serving the public’s needs wholeheartedly through digital services that are fast, easy, and secure.
