Bank Indonesia West Java Encourages Organic Rice Development
Bank Indonesia West Java, together with the Cianjur Regency Government, is promoting the development of organic agriculture. This is being done by strengthening the integrated food ecosystem from upstream to downstream through the development of organic rice cultivation.
Head of Bank Indonesia West Java Representative Office Junanto Herdiawan explained that organic agriculture is no longer merely a trend or an alternative choice, but rather an unquestionable necessity. Moreover, amid climate change, declining land fertility, and the public’s growing awareness of healthy, safe and quality food consumption, this effort has become essential for the development of organic rice.
According to him, the development of organic rice has proven to have a positive impact not only on health but also on agronomic and economic aspects. Based on field evaluations, rice productivity, which previously stood at around 5-6 tonnes per hectare, has now surged sharply to reach 7.7-8.3 tonnes per hectare.
“Organic agriculture is now no longer just a lifestyle choice, but a strategic necessity to strengthen regional food security whilst building an integrated food ecosystem from upstream to downstream. This urgency is growing stronger amid the challenges of climate change and declining land quality,” he said on Thursday (30/7).
As a tangible commitment to supporting inflation control through the development of organic rice, he added, BI West Java together with the Cianjur Regency Government provided training for farmers and Islamic boarding school students engaged in agriculture. The programme was then translated into the construction of ten pilot demonstration plots spread across eight districts in Cianjur Regency.
These demonstration plots serve as direct educational facilities, centres for organic cultivation learning, and pilot models designed to be replicated on a massive scale. “This step is expected to boost production volume, maintain the continuity of food supply, support price affordability at the consumer level, and simultaneously improve the welfare of local farmers,” Junanto concluded.
STRENGTHENING SYNERGY
Through the development of organic rice, Bank Indonesia West Java is committed to continuously strengthening synergy with various strategic partners, especially regional governments.
Cianjur Regency is known as one of the main food barns and the largest rice production centre in West Java. Based on official data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) for 2025, the region ranks fourth as the largest rice-producing area in West Java.
This great potential continues to be optimised through increased productivity, improved harvest quality, and the application of farming models that are adaptive to climate change without neglecting ecological sustainability.
“The Cianjur Regency Government is also actively encouraging the younger generation to take a more active role in agricultural development as a sector that is strategic, economically valuable, and has promising prospects,” he said.
Junanto expressed hope that Cianjur would further consolidate its position as a leading agricultural region making a real contribution to West Java’s economic growth.
