Bank Indonesia West Java Encourages Organic Rice Development

Bank Indonesia West Java, together with the Cianjur Regency Government, is encouraging the development of organic rice farming. This is achieved by strengthening the integrated food ecosystem from upstream to downstream through the development of organic rice cultivation. Head of Bank Indonesia West Java Junanto Herdiawan explained that organic farming is no longer just a trend or an alternative choice, but a necessity, especially amid climate change challenges and declining land quality. He noted that the programme has proven to have a positive impact on both agronomic and economic aspects. Field evaluations show that productivity has increased, with yields jumping from around 5-6 tons per hectare to 7.7-8.3 tons per hectare. As a concrete commitment to support inflation control through organic rice development, Bank Indonesia West Java and the Cianjur Regency Government have provided training for farmers and young agricultural students. This programme has been translated into the construction of demonstration plots in eight sub-districts across Cianjur. These plots serve as direct educational tools, learning centres for organic cultivation, and replicable models. Junanto stated that this step is expected to boost production volume, maintain food supply continuity, support consumer price affordability, and improve farmer welfare. Cianjur is recognised as one of the main food barns and the largest rice production centre in West Java. The region’s significant potential is being continuously optimised through increased productivity, improved harvest quality, and the implementation of climate-adaptive agricultural models without neglecting ecological sustainability. The Cianjur Regency Government is also actively encouraging the younger generation to participate in developing the agricultural sector as a strategic and promising economic pillar.
