Bank Indonesia (BI) will tighten the US dollar foreign exchange purchase policy to USD 25,000 per person per month. “We are preparing to lower it further to USD 25,000, so purchases of dollars above USD 25,000 will require underlying documentation,” said BI Governor Perry Warjiyo during a press conference at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, monitored via the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel. Recently, BI has tightened the threshold for dollar purchases without underlying documentation to USD 50,000 per person per month from the previous USD 100,000 per person per month. The tightening of US dollar purchases is one of seven measures by BI to stabilise the rupiah’s exchange rate. Perry stated that the seven measures have been approved by President Prabowo Subianto. BI records show that US dollar spot transactions have declined following the tightened foreign exchange purchase policy. BI Deputy Governor Thomas Djiwandono said that as of 17 April 2026, the average daily customer spot transactions decreased from USD 78 million to USD 60 million. “Regarding the banks’ readiness, as there is a one-month transition for reporting and document submission, the banks are already prepared and there are no issues there,” he said during the press conference following the BI Board of Governors Meeting held online on Wednesday, 22 April 2026. BI Governor Perry Warjiyo added that the use of underlying documents in spot transactions has increased to 93.5 percent from 89.2 percent. According to him, although it has only been running for a short time, the tightening of the foreign exchange transaction policy has already yielded positive results.
