Bank Indonesia (BI) will restrict the maximum monthly purchase of foreign currency against the rupiah, reducing the limit from US$100,000 per person per month to US$50,000 per person per month.

Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo announced the policy will take effect from 1 April 2026, in order to support rupiah exchange rate stability.

“To support the stability of the rupiah exchange rate and support foreign exchange market transaction policies that will take effect in April 2026, through adjustments to the cash foreign currency purchase threshold against the rupiah,” said Perry in a teleconference on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.

“From US$100,000 per person per month to US$50,000 per person per month,” he said.

Meanwhile, the sale limit for Domestic Non-Deliverable Forward (DNDF) has been increased from US$5 million per transaction to US$10 million per transaction. The buy and sell limits for swaps have also been increased from US$5 million to US$10 million per transaction.

Furthermore, Perry continued, BI will strengthen the provisions for foreign exchange traffic reporting (LLD), through adjusting the threshold for requirements of supporting documents for outgoing fund transfers in foreign currency from US$100,000 to US$50,000.

He explained that this measure aims to safeguard the rupiah exchange rate from the adverse effects of deteriorating global conditions due to war in the Middle East.

As of 16 March 2026, the rupiah exchange rate was recorded at Rp 16,985 per US dollar, weakening by 1.29 percentage points on a point-to-point basis compared to the end of February 2026.

“BI will continue to strengthen various policies to safeguard the rupiah exchange rate from the adverse effects of deteriorating global conditions due to Middle Eastern conflict,” he said.
