Bank Indonesia Responds as Rupiah Approaches 18,000 per US Dollar
Bank Indonesia has addressed the recent depreciation of the rupiah, which has approached the 18,000 level per US dollar, reaching 17,930 on Wednesday, 3 June 2026.
Ramdan Denny Prakoso, Head of Bank Indonesia’s Communication Department, stated that the central bank will continue to closely monitor developments in both global and domestic financial markets. “Bank Indonesia remains active in the market, optimising all available policy instruments to ensure market mechanisms function correctly and to maintain sufficient foreign exchange liquidity to support financial market stability,” Ramdan said in an official statement.
Ramdan further noted that, effective from today, Bank Indonesia has implemented a threshold for cash foreign exchange purchases without underlying documentation, capped at US$25,000 per participant per month. Additionally, the central bank continues to encourage the use of local currencies in bilateral cooperation through local currency transaction schemes to reduce dependency on the US dollar.
Bank Indonesia maintains that rupiah exchange rate stability requires synergy among all stakeholders. “To this end, Bank Indonesia is strengthening coordination with the government, the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the banking sector, the business community, and market participants to ensure market mechanisms work effectively and to strengthen the external resilience of the national economy,” Ramdan added.
Ibrahim Assuaibi, Director of PT Traze Andalan Futures, noted that externally, the rupiah’s weakness is influenced by stagnant negotiations between the United States and Iran, which has caused global crude oil prices to rise. Internally, Ibrahim highlighted high demand for the US dollar, noting that “the public is increasingly moving their funds from conventional savings into foreign currency savings.”
He assessed that the government needs to maintain economic stability and public purchasing power, specifically by ensuring the availability of imported goods and providing stimulus to the population.
