Bank Indonesia Expands Currency Exchange Services at Migration Points
Bank Indonesia (BI) has expanded currency exchange services at migration points during the 16-17 March 2026 period. Muhammad Anwar Bashori, Head of BI’s Money Management Department, stated that 55 additional service points have been established, focused at airports, stations, terminals, ports, and rest areas.
The expansion aims to facilitate currency exchange needs for those returning to their hometowns for Eid al-Fitr. “The total quota for these additional services reaches approximately 11,900 exchange packages,” Anwar said in a written statement on Monday, 16 March 2026.
In Jakarta, one of the additional currency exchange services will be provided at Pasar Senen Station on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.
BI recorded 1,076,282 currency exchanges through official services by 13 March 2026. This figure surged 85.4 per cent compared to last year, which recorded 580,496 exchanges. Overall, BI is providing 9,294 currency exchange service points this year, up from 5,202 points last year.
“The high demand and service expansion demonstrate that public demand for small denomination notes for gift-giving traditions, Eid bonuses, and economic activities during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr remains very substantial,” Anwar said. BI has urged the public to exchange currency through official central bank and banking services.
According to Anwar, exchanges through official services guarantee currency authenticity and transaction security. In contrast, exchanges outside official channels carry several risks, including unverified currency authenticity, difficulty in confirming accurate amounts, lack of consumer protection or accountability, and vulnerability to fraud that could cause financial harm to the public.
For this year’s Eid al-Fitr, BI has prepared 185.6 trillion rupiah in usable banknotes. Of this amount, 177 trillion rupiah has been allocated to meet banking sector needs, including cash withdrawals through ATMs and bank branches. BI has prepared 8.6 trillion rupiah for currency exchange services with a value of 5.3 million rupiah per package.
