Bank Indonesia Claims Rp 50,000 Banknote is the Second Most Secure Currency in the World, Equipped with 17 Security Features

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Bank Indonesia (BI) has stated that the Rp 50,000 banknote issued in 2022 is one of the most secure currencies in the world and is difficult to counterfeit.

Deputy Governor of BI, Ricky P. Gozali, said that the Rp 50,000 banknote issued in 2022 has 17 advanced security features, making it difficult to counterfeit.

This has been recognised internationally through the ‘Best New Banknote Series’ award at the IACA Currency Awards 2023 and a ranking as the second most secure currency in the world (World’s Most Secure Currencies).

“Thank God, the improvement in the quality of the rupiah has been carried out and recognised by the world. This is reflected in the award for the 2022 series of rupiah banknotes as the best banknote series,” said Ricky during a press statement on the destruction of counterfeit rupiah banknotes at his office on Wednesday (13/5/2026).

The aspects that have been strengthened include the use of a security thread that uses the latest microlenses technology, the kawung batik pattern on the security thread, and the expansion of images that can be seen through ultraviolet light.

Ricky revealed that the more advanced the security aspects of the rupiah, the more the number of counterfeit banknotes found can continue to decrease each year.

According to BI data, in 2023 the circulation of counterfeit money was recorded at 5 pieces per million (ppm), which means that 5 counterfeit banknotes were found in every 1 million rupiah banknotes in circulation.

This figure was then successfully reduced to 4 ppm throughout the 2024-2025 period. This positive trend continued until 2026, where in April 2026 the ratio of counterfeit banknotes found dropped sharply to only 1 ppm.

“This achievement is inseparable from the close synergy and coordination of various elements. Furthermore, of course, the strengthening of the quality of the rupiah, both in terms of materials, printing technology, and increasingly modern security features, makes it easier to recognise and more difficult to counterfeit,” he said.

“In this case, the public plays an increasingly vital role in preventing the circulation of counterfeit rupiah. For this reason, together with Botasupal, we continue to promote the ‘Love, Pride, Understand Rupiah’ campaign so that the public is more aware of how to ensure the authenticity of rupiah banknotes through the 3D method,” said Ricky.

In addition, Ricky also urged the public to always take care of rupiah banknotes by applying the 5 Don’ts, namely, don’t fold, don’t scribble, don’t staple, don’t crumple, and don’t wet.
