The Central Board of Muhammadiyah and PT Bank Syariah Nasional (Bank BSN) are expanding their sharia financial services cooperation to cover education, housing, financial management, and productive business financing. The partnership is expected to strengthen financial support for thousands of Muhammadiyah charitable enterprises (AUM) and members across various regions.

The operational agreement for integrated sharia banking services was signed by Bank BSN Director of Network & Retail Funding Ari Kurniaman and PP Muhammadiyah Chairman Irwan Akib in Jakarta on Friday (12/6/2026). This agreement follows a memorandum of understanding signed by Bank BSN President Director Alex Sofyan Noor and PP Muhammadiyah General Chairman Haedar Nashir in February 2026.

Bank BSN President Director Alex Sofyan Noor stated that the five-year cooperation is intended to support the operations of the Muhammadiyah organisation and its network of charitable enterprises, which includes universities, schools, hospitals, and orphanages. “The main purpose of this cooperation is to serve as a basis for optimising the mutually beneficial use of sharia banking services. We want to present productive financial solutions that directly reach teachers, employees, and members within the Muhammadiyah community, while safeguarding the economic sustainability of the ummah,” Alex said in Jakarta on Friday.

Through this partnership, various sharia financial services will be expanded within the Muhammadiyah environment, including savings services, payroll management, education financing, housing financing, and capital support for Muhammadiyah charitable enterprises. Members will gain access to savings services through Bank BSN’s Tabungan Berkah Wadiah product, which requires an initial deposit of Rp50,000 and carries no monthly administration fees. A co-branded debit card linked to the Muhammadiyah ’Aisyiyah Super Apps (MASA) application will also be available.

PP Muhammadiyah Chairman Irwan Akib noted the banking sector’s important role in sustaining the various charitable enterprises managed by Muhammadiyah. “This cooperation with Bank BSN is expected to provide financial support for thousands of Muhammadiyah charitable enterprises, from universities, schools, and hospitals to orphanages, which cannot operate independently without banking support,” he said.

Irwan expressed hope that the partnership would also open broader access to financing for students needing educational support and help provide housing for Muhammadiyah educators and employees. “We hope Bank BSN will offer concrete solutions through scholarship schemes or study completion financing for students in need. We also encourage collaboration on housing provision for teachers, lecturers, and employees who do not yet own homes, utilising Bank BSN’s expertise and track record with its KPR Sejahtera mortgage programme,” he explained.

In the housing sector, Bank BSN has already disbursed financing to 980 Muhammadiyah members, comprising 835 subsidised mortgage units and 145 non-subsidised mortgage units. The bank is also developing a housing project specifically for lecturers and employees of the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta (UMJ). Meanwhile, Muhammadiyah charitable enterprises will gain access to working capital financing to support business development, facility construction, and other operational needs. These financing facilities include commercial housing development, land procurement, and contractor financing.

To support transparency and transaction efficiency, the financial management of Muhammadiyah schools, hospitals, and business units will utilise the Bale Syariah platform. The system is equipped with virtual accounts for automatic transaction reconciliation and supports digital payments via QRIS. Both parties also committed to expanding sharia financial literacy education to the public through various regularly held activities.

This cooperation comes amid Bank BSN’s growing performance. As of May 2026, the company’s total assets reached Rp78.21 trillion, representing 23 percent year-on-year growth. Third-party funds stood at Rp61.15 trillion, a 14 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Over the same period, the company’s profit grew 40 percent year-on-year to Rp473 billion. The Bale Syariah digital application, launched in February 2026, has already attracted 187,319 active users with transaction volumes reaching Rp3.51 trillion from more than 1.47 million transactions.
