Banjarmasin Hajj Pilgrim Passes Away in Arafah

Banjarmasin (ANTARA) – A Hajj pilgrim from Banjarmasin Embarkation in South Kalimantan has passed away while performing the wukuf ritual in Arafah, Saudi Arabia, during the 1447 H / 2026 M Hajj season.
H Eddy Khairani, Chairman of the Hajj Pilgrimage Service Team (PPIH) for Banjarmasin Embarkation, confirmed the news in Banjarbaru on Tuesday, identifying the deceased as Maniah Abdullah Ibai (64), a pilgrim from West Kotawaringin Regency, Central Kalimantan.
A member of Kloter 05 from Banjarmasin Embarkation was confirmed to have passed away during the wukuf ritual at Arafah on Monday, 25 May 2026, at approximately 1:25 PM Saudi Arabia Time.
“We received confirmation of the sad news yesterday at 8:05 PM WITA. On behalf of the entire South Kalimantan Regional Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and Banjarmasin Embarkation PPIH family, we extend our deepest condolences to Maniah Abdullah Ibai, a pilgrim from West Kotawaringin,” he said.
Eddy Khairani also urged all Kloter officers to repeatedly remind pilgrims to drink sufficient water to avoid dehydration, which can occur unexpectedly.
Regarding the cause of death, Kloter 05’s Health Officer, Dr. Tania, stated that the deceased initially complained of shortness of breath, oxygen saturation of 85% without supplemental oxygen, and refused food.
She was referred to Al Noor Hospital and treated for five days before being cleared to return to her Kloter. Upon arrival at Arafah, her condition worsened with shortness of breath and she was transferred to an Arafah clinic.
“At the clinic, intravenous fluids and medication were administered, but unfortunately, she passed away due to cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, and pneumonia,” Dr. Tania explained.
This brings the total number of Banjarmasin Embarkation pilgrims who have died during the holy pilgrimage to two.
The Banjarmasin Embarkation in South Kalimantan has dispatched 19 Kloters this Hajj season — 14 from South Kalimantan and five from Central Kalimantan — totalling 6,804 pilgrims.
