Bangli Regency, Bali (ANTARA) — The Bangli Regency Government in Bali is cleaning up litter at Lake Batur to safeguard the preservation and sustainability of one of the island’s key water sources. “We want to ensure that Lake Batur remains pristine, its surroundings healthy, and its water quality good so that it can continue to provide benefits to the community,” said Bangli Regent Sang Nyoman Sedana Arta in Kintamani, Bangli, Bali, on Sunday.

The litter-cleaning operation was carried out at four points around the lake: Jaba Pura Ulun Danu Songan, Pura Jati, Kedisan Pier, and Trunyan Village.

The Bangli Regent explained that the clean-up action followed the directive of President Prabowo Subianto at the National Coordinating Meeting of the Central and Regional Governments on 2 February 2026. This was followed by the Bali Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda) meeting on 19 February, and the Bangli Forkopimda with all heads of regional agencies (OPD), vertical agencies and state-owned enterprises (BUMD) on 23 February.

Besides aiming to keep the environment clean, the largest lake-cleaning event in Bali also supports the realisation of the Indonesia ASRI programme (Aman, Sehat, Resik dan Indah) and the Bangli BISA programme (Bersih, Indah, Sejuk dan Asri).

“This activity is also a moment to instil a sense of care for the environment, particularly in the Lake Batur area,” added the Bangli Regent.

A total of 5,055 participants took part in the activity, comprising 2,435 people from OPD and vertical agencies, 220 from BUMD and BUMN, 1,710 from villages and kelurahan, 660 students from primary to senior secondary levels, and health workers from Puskesmas Kintamani IV and V.

In addition to the clean-up, the event was also held to mark Nyepi Day, the Saka New Year 1948.

Ten thousand tilapia fingerlings were released, and around 1,000 litres of eco-enzyme were poured into the lake waters to maintain water quality naturally.

The initiative is expected to support the preservation of Lake Batur’s ecosystem and maintain environmental balance.

The Bangli Regent stressed that Lake Batur plays a crucial role as a water source for Bali, and thus its preservation must be a collective effort. “We want to rekindle public awareness of protecting this lake as a source of life. If the lake is kept in good condition, the ecosystem, environment, and the welfare of the people will also improve,” he said.

He added that the preservation of Lake Batur is also in line with the principles of the Batur UNESCO Global Geopark, namely honouring the Earth for the welfare of the people.
