Bangkalan (ANTARA) - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Bangkalan Regency, East Java, has recorded that 17 villages spread across three districts are at risk of experiencing extreme drought during this year’s dry season.

“This is based on the results of our mapping and reports submitted by village heads to the Bangkalan Regency BPBD,” said the Head of Implementation for Bangkala BPBD, M. Zainul Qomar, in Bangkalan, East Java, on Sunday.

He noted that the 17 villages potentially facing extreme drought are located in the Konang, Geger, and Kokop districts. Specifically, there are five villages in Konang District, while Geger and Kokop districts each have six villages at risk.

However, he continued, the drought potential in 10 of these villages is not as severe as in the other seven, as local water sources such as wells remain available.

“Based on the number of households, approximately 15,789 families are at risk of experiencing drought and a shortage of clean water in Bangkalan during this year’s dry season,” he said.

Regarding the potential drought and clean water shortages, Bangkalan BPBD has prepared an initial reserve of 300,000 litres of clean water, which is ready to be distributed gradually to the villages in need.
