Bandung Zoo Tender Receives Little Interest, Former Employees Hope for Quick Clarity and No Prolonged Uncertainty

Former employees of the Tamansari Wildlife Foundation, currently tasked with managing Bandung Zoo, hope for swift clarity on the appointment of a new operator for Bandung Zoo. This would prevent the zoo from remaining in limbo and allow it to reopen to the public. Bandung Zoo Coordinator Rohman Suryaman stated that the Bandung City Government has yet to appoint a new manager three months after the transitional period ended on 5 May. He noted that conditions at Bandung Zoo are stable, with animal feed and employee welfare covered by the city government. “After 5 May, there has been no decision regarding a new manager. Conditions at Bandung Zoo are fine, with animal feed fulfilled and employees covered by the city,” he said when contacted on Thursday (7/5/2026). He mentioned holding an online meeting with the West Java Provincial Secretary, noting that animal feed is also supported by the provincial government. However, employees still hope for a permanent manager to be appointed soon so the zoo can reopen to the public. “Indeed, employees want a quick resolution regarding management to avoid limbo, anxiety, and to reopen,” he explained. Regarding plans by the West Java Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) to relocate endemic and protected animals, he stated that as implementers, they follow applicable regulations. However, explanations from the West Java Governor and Provincial Secretary indicate that the animals will not be relocated elsewhere. Meanwhile, West Java Provincial Secretary Herman Suryatman said the provincial government, through a regional-owned enterprise (BUMD), will take over Bandung Zoo if the tender process fails to appoint a new manager. The provincial government will prepare a suitable BUMD and ensure the welfare and health of the animals are guaranteed.
