Bandung Seeks Waste Emergency Status from West Java Provincial Government Due to Long Weekend
Bandung City Government has submitted a request for a waste emergency status to the West Java Provincial Government due to increased pressure on waste management systems during the extended holiday period.
Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan stated that the surge in community activity and tourist arrivals has directly increased daily waste volumes in the provincial capital.
“During this holiday season, from Eid al-Adha to consecutive long weekends, the environmental carrying capacity is under severe strain. Waste management is one of our biggest challenges,” Farhan said in Bandung on Monday, 1 June, as reported by Antara.
He explained that the city’s waste management system remains heavily reliant on the Sarimukti Final Processing and Treatment Facility (TPPA), with no dedicated landfill of its own. Capacity is thus constrained by the quota allocated by the West Java Provincial Government for residue disposal at Sarimukti.
Farhan praised the West Java Governor for providing additional transport quotas to the TPPA, which he said has helped prevent further waste accumulation across the city.
“We can manage processing to the best of our ability, but residual waste still requires provincial support as management of the Sarimukti TPPA falls under provincial jurisdiction,” he added.
Farhan noted that the city government is currently awaiting the provincial government’s decision on the emergency status request, in line with criteria set by the Ministry of Environment.
“If declared, the emergency status would allow local authorities to implement urgent policy measures to accelerate waste management efforts,” he said.
He emphasised that waste management is not solely the government’s responsibility but also requires public participation in reducing waste at source.
He expressed hope that public awareness of waste segregation and reduction would continue to improve to maintain Bandung’s cleanliness and environmental sustainability.
“This is an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between government, citizens, the business sector, and all stakeholders in tackling increasingly complex waste issues,” added the former well-known Bandung presenter.
