Bandung Regency Government is continuing to reduce the extent of flood inundation, a longstanding issue in the area. The current area affected by flooding has been recorded at 1,500 hectares, down sharply from 4,500 hectares. Bandung Regent Dadang Supriatna (affectionately called KDS) said the reduction in flooded area has resulted from the construction of retention ponds and water polder systems. However, to complete the remaining affected area, the regency has secured central government budget support.

He said their proposal has received approval from the Ministry of Public Works with a total budget of around Rp151 billion under a multi-year scheme.

In addition to the retention lake construction, the main focus now is sediment dredging in the Citarum estuary. He revealed that the volume of sediment has reached 10 million cubic metres, posing a major obstacle to water flow during heavy rains.

His office has asked the Citarum River Basin Agency (BBWS) to carry out normalisation as soon as possible, especially in Tegalluar. β€˜The Minister of Public Works has expressed readiness, and details are currently being discussed by BBWS and the Public Works and Housing Agency (Dinas PUTR),’ he said.

Uniquely, the flood-control infrastructure project also involves local entrepreneurs. Under Bandung Regency Regulation, developers in the area are required to donate at least 10% of their land for social facilities and for the management of public water resources.

With the integration of central funding, local policy, and private sector participation, the Bandung Regency Government is optimistic that the threat of a major flood in the Tegalluar and Rancaekek areas can be mitigated sustainably.
