Bandung Regency Partners with PUPR to Push for Permanent Flood Solutions
Bandung Regency Government is intensifying efforts to address the frequent flooding in southern Bandung areas. This commitment is demonstrated through a visit by Bandung Regent Dadang Supriatna to the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing to propose several strategic programmes.
In the meeting, Bandung Regency proposed the normalisation of the Cisungalah River, which passes through Majalaya and Solokanjeruk sub-districts—two regions that have long been prone to flooding due to river overflows during high rainfall.
Additionally, the construction of retention ponds in Tegalluar Village (Bojongsoang Sub-district) and Sukamanah Village (Rancaekek Sub-district) is a primary focus.
“We want flood handling to no longer be reactive. Therefore, we are proposing more comprehensive structural steps, from river normalisation to the construction of retention ponds,” said Dadang on Tuesday (21/4/2026).
He explained that the current condition of the Cisungalah River is one of the main triggers of flooding. Shallow depths, narrowed channels, and high sedimentation have reduced the river’s water capacity.
This situation is exacerbated by high rainfall intensity and land-use changes in the upstream areas and riverbanks. “Normalisation is urgently needed. Without reorganisation and dredging, the potential for flooding will continue to recur every rainy season,” he said.
Furthermore, retention ponds are projected as an important solution in controlling water discharge. Their function as temporary storage allows water to be released gradually to the main river, thereby reducing the risk of overflow.
“These retention ponds will serve as buffer zones. Excess water can be held first, then released in a measured manner so as not to burden the river flow,” he clarified.
Dadang added that the locations for the retention pond construction have been determined based on technical studies and flood-prone area maps in Bandung Regency.
This visit to the ministry is also a follow-up to the attention from Deputy Chairman of the DPR Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal regarding flood handling in Greater Bandung. He assessed that synergy between local government, central government, and the legislature is an important factor in accelerating programme implementation.
“We appreciate the DPR’s support. This provides encouragement for us to continue accelerating handling,” he said.
Furthermore, Dadang emphasised that flood handling must be integrated, not partial. An approach from upstream to downstream, including strengthening management in the Citarum River Basin Area, is key to long-term solutions.
“The flood problem must be addressed comprehensively. Therefore, we continue to strengthen collaboration so that the resulting solutions are truly sustainable,” he said.
Bandung Regency also assures that it will monitor these proposals until they are realised. It is hoped that these steps will reduce the intensity and impact of flooding, while creating a safer and more organised environment for the community.
