Bandung Regency Government Develops Strategy to Tackle Chronic Flooding in South Bandung
The Bandung Regency government is taking swift action to address chronic flooding in the South Bandung region. Bupati Dadang Supriatna has announced plans to execute the construction of a new drainage channel designed to directly channel water into the Citarum River. The strategic plan was revealed during an inspection of flood-prone areas in Dayeuhkolot and Baleendah districts on Friday (12/6). The proposed drainage channel will be approximately two metres wide, specifically engineered to increase water capacity and minimise blockages that have historically caused inundation. “The concept is to expand the capacity of the channels and reorganise the utilities. If this channel can be properly connected to the Citarum River, I am optimistic it can reduce the flood risk in the Dayeuhkolot area,” stated Bupati Dadang Supriatna. In addition to the new drainage infrastructure, the Bandung Regency Government is accelerating the normalisation of the Cipalasari River. Through a pentahelix collaboration scheme, a 2.5-kilometre stretch of the river along the Dayeuhkolot-Moh Toha road, located in front of PT Daliatex to Garmin, has been dredged. The Bupati also confirmed that permission has been obtained from landowners to widen the Cigede River, a crucial step to facilitate smoother water flow during periods of high discharge. Dadang emphasised that the success of flood management hinges on mutual cooperation. “We do not want to engage in a blame game. The most important thing now is that all parties work together to find a solution. Alhamdulillah, support from the community and business owners has been substantial,” he asserted. The government’s flood control efforts are not limited to Dayeuhkolot and Baleendah; similar programmes are being pushed in Bojongsoang and Rancaekek, including the preparation of land for new retention ponds and river widening at other vulnerable points. With these simultaneous programmes, the Bandung Regency Government is optimistic that the impact of flooding in South Bandung can be reduced significantly and gradually.
