JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The government plans to introduce the Bandung Basin Metropolitan Area Bus Rapid Transit (BRT BBMA) service in the Bandung Raya area as an effort to strengthen the urban mass transportation system and reduce traffic congestion.

The public transportation project is targeted to begin operating in 2027 and is expected to improve connectivity between regions in Bandung and its surroundings.

“In preparation for the operational launch of BRT BBMA in 2027, several locations will be built as depots,” said Director of Road Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation, Muiz Thohir, in an official statement on Friday (May 15, 2026).

As a follow-up, the Directorate General of Land Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation, together with the Bandung City Government, held a meeting at the Bandung City Hall this week.

The meeting discussed efforts to encourage more integrated, efficient, and sustainable urban mobility in the Bandung Raya area.

“The presence of BRT is expected to become the main choice for people in their daily transportation through services that are safe, comfortable, punctual, and easily accessible,” said Muiz.

“The construction of BRT BBMA is not just about building physical stops and corridor facilities, but also part of an effort to build a connected public transportation ecosystem that is oriented towards the needs of the community,” continued Muiz.

He said that the success of the implementation of BRT BBMA also depends on the support and synergy of all parties, including the central government, local government, project implementers, and service users.

On this occasion, the Mayor of Bandung, Muhammad Farhan, also emphasized the local government’s commitment to realizing an integrated urban transportation system through BRT BBMA.

“Currently, work on the Leuwipanjang Depot and the Cicaheum Depot is underway,” said Farhan.

“In the field, several challenges were found, such as public transportation that is still operating in the Cicaheum terminal and there are still traders in the terminal area,” he added.

Despite this, he stated that they will immediately resolve some of the problems found in the field so that it is hoped that the progress of preparing the BRT operation will run smoothly.

For information, the Bandung BRT is in the stage of building supporting infrastructure.

A number of jobs that are currently being carried out include clearing land for the construction of a depot in the Leuwipanjang area to the construction of stops at several strategic points.

The presence of the Bandung Raya BRT is projected to be the backbone of public transportation that connects five regions, namely Bandung City, Cimahi City, Bandung Regency, West Bandung Regency, and Sumedang Regency.

This system is expected to improve connectivity between regions while reducing traffic congestion, which has been a major problem in the Bandung Raya area.

The West Java Provincial Government said that the progress of the project can be monitored through the official website of the local government.

While waiting for the full operation of the Bandung Raya BRT, public transportation services in the area are currently still served by Trans Metro Bandung (TMB).
