Bandung Mayor to Demolish All Illegal Structures Citywide
Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan has stated that all illegal buildings, or ‘bangli’, erected on pavements will be dismantled in stages. The demolition aims to restore the function of pavements for pedestrians.
“We are starting with Jalan Dipatiukur, Jalan Teuku Umar, and Jalan Hasanuddin. In principle, no permanent or semi-permanent structures are allowed on pavements,” Farhan said while inspecting the demolition on Wednesday (24/6/2026).
The Bandung City Government will sweep other locations with illegal structures that violate regulations, as stipulated in Bandung City Regional Regulation Number 9 of 2019 on Public Order and Tranquillity. Farhan confirmed the operation will continue until all areas of Bandung City are free from illegal buildings.
“It will happen [the crackdown across all areas], definitely,” Farhan stated.
Farhan explained that the enforcement process begins with a warning letter issued to the owners of structures built in prohibited areas. Despite some initial resistance, he claimed residents of Bandung are cooperative when engaged in dialogue.
“There is certainly some rejection, but if you engage the people of Bandung in discussion, God willing, it can be resolved,” he said.
