Bandung Mayor Requests Provincial Government to Declare Waste Emergency Following Long Holiday
The Mayor of Bandung issued this request when questioned by journalists regarding the evaluation of the long holiday period in Bandung. He initially stated that his region experienced a significant surge in waste during the holidays.
“During this holiday season, the burden on the environment’s carrying capacity has been extraordinarily heavy. I would like to express my gratitude to the Governor for intervening directly to help us increase the waste transport quota to the Sarimukti landfill,” said Farhan, as reported on Tuesday (2/6/2026).
“Because, ultimately, the authority to increase the quota and open the gates of Sarimukti for waste disposal or final processing lies solely with the Governor of West Java. Bandung City does not have its own landfill, so what we can do is maximise processing efforts. If there are remaining piles, we fundamentally require assistance from the Governor,” he explained.
At this juncture, Farhan expressed his desire for Bandung to be officially designated as a waste emergency area. This status would allow the Bandung City Government to employ all necessary measures to manage the accumulation occurring in the field.
“At the same time, we have submitted a proposal to the provincial government so that Bandung City may be declared a waste emergency, in accordance with the categories established by the Ministry of Environment,” Farhan added.
Farhan’s request comes amidst the visible accumulation of waste at several disposal sites (TPS) across Bandung. According to available data, the volume of accumulated waste remains between 1,609 and 2,800 tonnes, with the largest piles concentrated across five specific disposal sites in the city.
