Bandung Mayor: No tolerance for illegal waste disposal sites
Bandung – Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan has stressed that there will be no tolerance for illegal waste disposal sites, saying they damage the city’s appearance and disturb residents’ comfort.
‘I do not want there to be any leniency toward illegal waste dumping points that ruin the face of Bandung and disrupt the comfort of the public,’ Farhan said in Bandung on Tuesday.
He noted that waste piling continues to be found at several strategic locations, including the Temporary Dumping Site (TPS) in the Cijambe area and in Tamansari, with residents also voicing complaints about waste management in neighbourhoods.
He emphasised that environmental problems should not be borne by a single agency or party. According to him, all elements of government, from the top level down to the smallest jurisdiction, must actively participate.
Nevertheless, he also praised waste-management efforts that have been operating well in a number of areas, notably Pasar Caringin.
The market’s waste-management programme has even attracted positive attention from the Ministry of Environment for its ability to turn waste problems into new economic potential, as well as a solution for environmental sustainability.
He hopes the success at Pasar Caringin can serve as an example and proof that the urban waste crisis can be resolved through strong integration.
