Bandung Mayor Frustrated as BRT Construction Causes Traffic Congestion

Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan has admitted he is frustrated with the construction of the Bus Rapid Transit mass transportation system, which is causing congestion on several roads in Bandung. Farhan will coordinate with the central government to resolve the issue. “The reason I appear tough on the BRT is because the consequences are severe. One of them is the construction of separators — the BRT uses separators,” he said in Bandung on Thursday (20/8/2026). Farhan said that building separators without widening the roads will only cause congestion. He acknowledged he will coordinate with the central government to address the problem. “The BRT uses separators without road widening. Will it be congested? Yes, it will be congested,” he said. He cited Jalan Kosambi as an example, where the use of separators for the BRT will only cause congestion. Farhan hopes there will be changes to the BRT design. “We are negotiating. There must be engineering design changes,” he said.
