BANDUNG: Twelve Grade IV students from Bandung International
School (BIS) visited Tribun Jabar, a local newspaper in Bandung
and a member of the Kompas media group.
Angela Speirs, Grade IV class teacher of the school, said the
visit was intended to better acquaint the students with the way
the news was written and a newspaper produced.
"At present the students are involved in a school newspaper
project. We would like them to see for themselves how to combine
the different elements into a product," said Angela, accompanied
by Lenny Gozali, a teaching assistant.
The students were very enthusiastic and asked many questions
ranging from how news stories and photo captions were written to
matters related to deadlines and advertisements.
They also wanted to know how the newspaper was laid out and
printed and what happened to unsold copies.
Angela, a teacher at BIS for 6 years, said that BIS adopted
the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program, in which
students, through their own enquiries, were kept busy with
activities that suited their development.
Apart from visiting Tribun Jabar, they also went to Golden Web
printing house.
One of Bandung's international schools, BIS is at Jl Suria
Sumantri No. 61. At present, over 200 students from various
nationalities study there. --JP
