Bandung Hit 42 Earthquakes Since Wednesday, BMKG Provides Explanation

A series of earthquakes have shaken Bandung Regency and its surrounding areas from Wednesday (16/09) until Thursday (17/09) morning.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), a total of 42 earthquakes occurred up until 05:30 WIB, with the largest measuring magnitude 3.1.

“From 16 September 2026 until 17 September at 05:30 WIB, 42 earthquake events were recorded,” said the Acting Head of BMKG Region II, Ana Oktavia Setiowati, as reported by Detikcom on Friday (18/09/2026).

Based on BMKG data, on Thursday (17/09), a magnitude 2.6 earthquake occurred at 04:59 WIB. The epicentre was located at coordinates 7.22 South Latitude and 107.60 East Longitude.

The earthquake was located on land, approximately 23 kilometres south of Bandung Regency, at a depth of 3 kilometres.

“Based on the location of the epicentre and the depth of the hypocentre, the earthquake that occurred is a type of shallow earthquake caused by an active fault,” explained Ana.

The earthquake was felt in the Pangalengan and Kertasari areas with an intensity scale of III MMI. Tremors at this scale are clearly felt inside houses and feel as though a truck is passing by.

BMKG stated that, so far, there have been no reports of building damage resulting from the series of earthquakes.

“However, up to this point, there have been no reports regarding building damage as an impact of these earthquakes. BMKG monitoring results show seismic activity in the form of a series of earthquakes occurring in the Bandung Regency area, West Java,” she explained.

BMKG has urged the public to remain calm and not to easily believe information that does not originate from official channels.
