Bandung Focuses on Developing BRT Buses and Electrifying Angkot Fleet

Bandung City Government has designated 2026 as a pivotal moment for accelerating infrastructure development, focusing on improving the public transportation system through the development of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and the rejuvenation of electric-based city transport vehicles (angkot). Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan stated that this programme is expected to serve as the backbone of mass transportation in Bandung. “For the BRT, we have received full support from the Ministry of Transportation. This will become a solution for more modern and integrated public transportation,” he said, quoted from an official statement on Friday (24/4/2026). This transformation not only aims to enhance the comfort and efficiency of services but also to support emission reductions and the creation of a cleaner environment. “We will encourage angkot to switch to an electric system. This is part of the environmentally friendly transportation transformation,” Farhan added. Farhan acknowledged that there are still several challenges in implementing the programme but is optimistic that they can be addressed gradually. With these various steps, the Bandung City Government hopes to improve the quality of transportation services while driving regional economic growth through better connectivity. This initiative also forms part of the long-term commitment to realising a modern, integrated, and sustainable transportation system in Bandung. “We are aware there are many challenges, but the important thing is that the work progresses and the benefits can be directly felt by the community,” he further stated.
