Bandung City Square Reopens on Indonesia's 81st Independence Day
Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan officially reopened Alun-alun Kota Bandung to the general public on Monday (17/8). The inauguration coincided with the People’s Party celebration commemorating the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, after the area underwent intensive evaluation and repairs since January 2026.
Farhan explained that the temporary closure was a response to numerous public complaints regarding the condition of facilities during the period from December 2025 to January 2026. After a series of improvements, the public open space was declared ready for gradual reuse.
In this reopening, the Bandung City Government implemented a new management scheme to maintain order and cleanliness. The Mayor instructed the Housing and Settlement Areas Agency (DPKP) together with Balonggede Urban Village to form a special team.
“Its task is to carry out cleaning while we educate the public about maintaining this square,” said Farhan. He emphasised that the square is not merely a physical facility, but a historical legacy of the founders of Bandung City that must be preserved together.
Regarding security aspects, access to the park area is now restricted. For the time being, officers are opening only one access gate for the public to facilitate technical supervision by DPKP and local authorities.
The Bandung City Government stressed that street vendor (PKL) activities are strictly prohibited from entering the park area. The arrangement of street vendors outside the park area is fully delegated to the urban village authorities in accordance with applicable regulations.
Although it has been reopened, the public cannot yet access the park for a full 24 hours. Farhan expressed hope that this opening can be permanent if no further crucial issues are found on the ground. He invited residents to utilise the open space for various positive activities such as gathering with family or picnicking (botram), provided they comply with the applicable rules.
“I invite residents to enjoy Alun-alun Bandung with various positive activities. Whether you want to play, have a picnic, or gather, please do, but still follow the rules,” he concluded.
