Bandung City Government Targets Bandung Zoo Reopening in Under a Year

The Bandung City Government in West Java is targeting the reopening of Bandung Zoo in less than a year following the appointment of a new operator. Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan stated on Saturday that the city administration is currently accelerating the revitalisation process for the Bandung Zoo area by finalising the concept and negotiating a cooperation agreement with the new operator. “The target is less than one year. However, there are two permits that take quite a long time, namely the conservation permit and the environmental impact analysis (Amdal),” he said. The administration aims for the signing of the agreement to be completed soon so that the revitalisation stages can begin immediately. He explained that the cooperation scheme still under negotiation includes discussions on profit-sharing, a grace period, and the time required to process various permits. “On Monday, I must meet with the Minister of Forestry regarding a memorandum of understanding, because this involves a fairly lengthy permitting process,” he said. In the revitalisation process, Farhan emphasised the importance of maintaining Bandung Zoo’s educational function, particularly as a learning facility for children. Additionally, he requested that the new operator retain the workforce currently employed at Bandung Zoo to ensure operational continuity. He also stressed that the zoo’s historical and cultural value must be preserved. “Bandung Zoo has historical and cultural value. That must be maintained,” he stated.
