Bandung City Government Rehabilitates Public Space, 10 Mahogany Trees to Green Riau Street
The Bandung City Government has begun rehabilitating public spaces on Jalan RE Martadinata, also known as Jalan Riau, by planting 10 mahogany trees to replace trees that were previously felled without permission.
The planting was carried out by the Bandung City Department of Housing and Settlement Areas (DPKP) on Wednesday (2/9). A total of 10 mahogany trees, aged approximately 5–6 years with an average height of over five metres, were planted at the location.
The Head of the Parks and Decoration Division of the Bandung City DPKP, Nana Kurniawan, stated that all trees have been planted and have now entered an intensive maintenance phase.
“Alhamdulillah, today we planted 10 trees; they have been planted and the process is complete. The species is mahogany, with an estimated age of 5 to 6 years,” he said.
According to him, before being planted, each tree underwent a root treatment process to anticipate pest and fungal attacks. Additionally, the DPKP installed root reinforcements to ensure the trees can grow optimally and adapt more quickly to their new environment.
“We treated the roots first to anticipate pests and fungi. After planting, root reinforcements were also installed as part of the post-planting maintenance,” he explained.
Nana mentioned that the trees will continue to be monitored periodically by DPKP officers. Monitoring is conducted to ensure the trees remain healthy and grow well.
“We cannot promise a one hundred per cent success rate, as the possibility of growth failure still exists. However, if any die, we will replace them with new ones,” he added.
Regarding regional coordination, Nana noted that the DPKP continues to communicate with sub-district and village authorities so that supervision of the planted trees can run more optimally.
“Regional coordination has been carried out. We also coordinated with the sub-district head to assist with local supervision,” he said.
He noted that information regarding the condition of the trees does not only come from the government but can also be reported directly by the public.
“Information can come from anywhere, including the community. In fact, sometimes the public provides very accurate information because they are directly at the location,” he concluded.
In addition to Jalan Riau, Nana continued, there are several other locations that are a priority for the government regarding tree-felling cases, including the Dago, Sawunggaling, and Cijerah areas. Tree rehabilitation in these locations will also be carried out once all administrative processes and law enforcement procedures are completed.
“The point is, we will rehabilitate the trees that have been felled. They will be replanted, but the timing will depend on the procedures that must be followed,” he concluded.
