Bandung City Government Evaluates Suitability of Conservation Body to Manage Bandung Zoo

Bandung City Government is currently conducting a feasibility test of the conservation body that would manage Bandung Zoo during the tender process, which runs through to the end of May. The authorities say the selection is meticulous because it touches on several important aspects. ‘The tender process for Bandung Zoo management is being accelerated and is targeted to be completed by the end of May 2026. We cannot simplify this process as it involves many important aspects,’ a government official said on Thursday, 14 May 2026. The government has also extended a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry related to animal handling and the sustainability of the zoo’s operations, to ensure animal protection and continued job security for workers during the transition. If by the deadline no operator meets the requirements, Bandung Zoo management could be taken over by the central government. However, officials hope for a continued local role. Farhan added that Bandung City Government, together with West Java Province, agreed that zoo management would be carried out under a regional government collaboration scheme, though regulatory hurdles remain. ‘If the government manages it directly, it must go through a BUMD. BUMD must first obtain a conservation permit. The process is not simple,’ he said. Faunaland Indonesia’s CEO, Danny Gunalen, said they have prepared a series of education- and conservation-based development programmes for Bandung Zoo if selected, and is optimistic due to their track record. ‘We hope that if entrusted with managing Bandung Zoo, it will be implemented according to the programmes we proposed,’ he said. The concept emphasises an interactive visitor experience while supporting the education programme of the Gerakan Reksawana Ilmu Pengetahuan Flora dan Fauna. ‘The concept is a city zoo based on education and conservation,’ he added. He noted this would be implemented at the Pramuka Campground area in Cibubur. Two hectares would be set aside for a walk-in zoo, while eight hectares would be developed into a safari-friendly area with tame animals for public viewing.
