Bandung (ANTARA) - The Bandung City Government is taking firm action against the existence of 60 illegal rubbish dumps (TPS), which are deemed to worsen the waste accumulation problem in Bandung.

Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan stressed that illegal TPS represent a form of legal violation as well as environmental pollution that cannot be tolerated.

“These illegal TPS cannot be allowed to continue. They are a form of legal violation and environmental pollution. We will not tolerate them,” Farhan said in Bandung on Friday.

He explained that the Bandung City Government is currently conducting 24-hour patrols to identify, remove, and close illegal TPS locations.

In addition, the government is also tracing the parties responsible for waste disposal activities at those sites.

He also appreciated the active role of the community in reporting the existence of illegal TPS through social media.

According to him, public participation greatly aids in accelerating on-site handling.

Farhan also called on the public to play an active role in reducing waste generation from households as the primary solution to the problem.

“It all comes back to us, whether we can reduce waste from our own homes or not,” he said.

On the other hand, the Bandung City Government is also enhancing waste processing capacity through several programmes, such as strengthening waste sorting facilities (Gaslah), developing incinerators, and processing organic waste in the Ciwastra and Gedebage areas.

“In the second quarter of this year, we will launch the RDF programme and add incinerator capacity to strengthen the waste management system,” he said.
