A riot that occurred on Jalan Tamansari in Bandung City, West Java, on Friday night (1/5) caused damage to several facilities in the area.

In addition to a police post at the intersection being set on fire, traffic signs and the control box or node controller for the city’s road surveillance cameras (CCTV) owned by the Bandung City Transportation Department (Dishub) were also damaged.

The Commander of the Bandung City Transportation Department Technicians, Rustandi Arvey, stated that the node controller was damaged by the crowd gathered on Jalan Tamansari. “It’s dented like this (the box), the hardware was damaged, it wasn’t stolen but destroyed,” said Rustandi on Saturday (2/5/2026).

According to Rustandi, the node controller was deliberately damaged and not targeted for theft because the damaged hardware was still at the location. “It was destroyed, so automatically it can’t function,” he added.

Rustandi revealed that the affected CCTV points are in the Pasteur, Paskal, Cihampelas, and Tamansari areas.

“The impact is from Pasteur to here, the CCTV and its network are cut off,” he said.

Looking ahead, Rustandi said his team plans to add iron bars to protect the node controller.

“Maybe later it will be caged, so it doesn’t get breached like this, that’s the plan. It still has to be here, but it will be caged,” he said.

Meanwhile, the number of affected CCTVs reaches 20 units.

“Many [affected], in Pasteur alone there are four, [total] around 20 [CCTVs affected],” he said.

Previously, the West Java Police Chief, Irjen Rudi Setiawan, confirmed that the crowd carrying out the demonstration that turned into a riot was not from the International Labour Day or May Day action.

The unrest occurred in Bandung on Friday night, coinciding with the commemoration of May Day or International Labour Day 2026. Earlier, in the afternoon and evening, not far from the riot location, workers and students gathered for a May Day action in front of the Gedung Sate on Jalan Diponegoro, Bandung City.

Rudi emphasised that the aspiration delivery actions were only carried out by students in the Jatinangor area, Sumedang, and around the West Java DPRD environment.

According to Rudi, the unrest in the Jalan Tamansari area, Bandung, did not originate from the labour day action groups. He confirmed that the involved crowd was actually an unknown group with characteristics of wearing all black and covering their faces.

“It turns out that in the afternoon towards evening, around 150 unknown people were seen, with the characteristics of wearing black, covering their faces, of course covering their faces to avoid being identified, and then carrying fuel materials,” said Rudi, quoted from detikJabar.

According to him, the riot group is suspected to have prepared for the riot action. This is evident from the equipment they carried, including bottles filled with fuel suspected to be Molotov cocktails, as well as other hard objects.

“Earlier we saw them spraying and so on, carrying bottles that were already filled with oil or fuel with wicks, or in other words Molotovs. Then other hard objects, because they damaged the traffic lights, street lamps, and other facilities, that was done by them,” he explained.

Although it was once chaotic, Rudi assured that the situation has returned to conducive. Police apparatus along with Kodam III/Siliwangi and the regional government are still on alert to maintain security.
