Banda Aceh Hands Over 30 Liveable Homes to Underprivileged Residents
The Banda Aceh municipal government has handed over 30 liveable housing units to underprivileged residents in the city. The assistance was derived from zakat funds collected through Baitul Mal Banda Aceh. “Alhamdulillah, we are handing over houses that have been completed,” said Banda Aceh Mayor Illiza Sa’aduddin Djamal while presenting house keys to beneficiaries in Banda Aceh on Friday. The 30 liveable homes are the result of construction or completion under the 2025 budget year housing assistance programme from Baitul Mal Banda Aceh. Illiza stated that the liveable homes were built using zakat, infak, and sedekah (ZIS) funds managed by Baitul Mal Banda Aceh. She said her administration had personally inspected the beneficiaries’ previous homes, which were truly unfit for habitation. Therefore, with the provision of these new houses, they can live more comfortably and peacefully. Meanwhile, Chairman of Baitul Mal Kota Banda Aceh Yusuf Al Qardhawy said that last year’s ZIS-funded programme for liveable housing assistance and rehabilitation totalled 57 units, comprising 30 new builds and 27 rehabilitations. He added that the condition of the recipients’ old homes was extremely concerning, failing to meet liveable housing standards and endangering the safety and health of the occupants. “They feel helped, especially since the entire process from application to receiving the house incurred no charges whatsoever. This programme is completely free,” he said. On this occasion, Yusuf invited muzaki, entrepreneurs, and institutions operating in Banda Aceh to fulfil their zakat obligations through Baitul Mal Kota Banda Aceh as the official zakat management body. According to him, the more zakat collected, the greater the benefits that can be felt by the community, including through the construction of liveable homes for impoverished families and other forms of assistance.
