Banda Aceh Echelon II Official Detained Over Alleged Same-Sex Relations, Undergoes Intensive Questioning

An echelon II official in the Banda Aceh city government has been detained by the Banda Aceh Civil Service Police Unit and Wilayatul Hisbah (Satpol PP-WH).

The detention stems from allegations of same-sex sexual relations. Banda Aceh Mayor Illiza Sa’aduddin Djamal confirmed the matter, stating that the official, who serves at the Banda Aceh Inspectorate, is still undergoing intensive examination.

“Yes, I have just returned from out of town and it is true. But I also do not know yet because everything is still in process. Later everything can be confirmed with the Satpol PP,” she said, as quoted on Saturday, 15 August 2026.

According to information received by Illiza, the official was detained together with a non-civil servant resident on Wednesday, 12 August 2026. Both were then taken to the Banda Aceh Satpol PP-WH office to undergo examination.

“When I was in Batam yesterday, he was arrested, and now he is already at the Satpol PP. Both of them were arrested,” she said.

Illiza said the Banda Aceh city government will not be selective in enforcing regulations and will leave the examination process to the authorised institutions.

“In essence, we are not selective in law enforcement. We are proceeding according to the applicable law,” she said.

According to her, the examination process is necessary to ascertain the events that occurred and to determine the next legal steps.

Illiza said the city government has also not yet determined any action regarding the official’s employment status because the examination process is still ongoing.

She said follow-up on the status of the civil servant will be carried out in accordance with the applicable civil service mechanisms and authority.
