Ban on Restaurant Sweeping During Ramadan: PP Muhammadiyah Says It Prevents Unrest
Jakarta — Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah Dadang Kahmad has expressed his agreement with Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung regarding the ban on sweeping operations by mass organisations targeting restaurants. Dadang said the prohibition was aimed at preventing unrest.
“I believe the ban is correct in order to prevent disturbances,” Dadang said when contacted on Sunday (15/2/2026).
Dadang stated that only law enforcement authorities have the right to open or close establishments. Nevertheless, he expressed hope that adherents of other faiths would also respect Muslims who are fasting.
“Conversely, we appeal to those who are not fasting to refrain from ostentatiously eating lunch in open spaces and to respect those who are fasting, even though those who fast will not be tempted by things that would invalidate their fast,” he said.
Previously, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung affirmed that he would not permit mass organisations to conduct sweeping operations at restaurants during the month of Ramadan. He called on all parties to maintain a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere as the fasting month approaches.
Pramono made the statement after inaugurating the Kerapatan Gereja Protestan Minahasa (KGPM) church building in the Senen area of Central Jakarta on Saturday (14/2).
According to him, welcoming Ramadan must be done with peace, not with actions that cause public anxiety.
“I wish to affirm that welcoming Ramadan must be filled with peace and harmony,” Pramono said in the Senen area of Central Jakarta on Saturday (14/2).
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, he said, has prepared various measures to ensure the period of worship proceeds in an orderly manner. When asked about the potential for sweeping operations at eateries by mass organisations, Pramono reaffirmed the ban.
“As governor, I am responsible for this and I do not permit any sweeping operations,” he stressed.
