Bamboo Besek Craftsmen in Bantul Overwhelmed by Orders Ahead of Eid al-Adha
Besek bamboo craftsmen in Kaliputih, Pendowoharjo, Sewon, Bantul are overwhelmed with orders ahead of Eid al-Adha. The flood of orders has even forced some artisans to turn work away.
One besek craftsman in Kaliputih, Jumini (65), said orders for besek began to rise over the past two months, particularly for the 18-centimetre size or for meat weighing 1 kilogram.
‘Yes, there is a rise in besek orders, especially the 18-centimetre size, that is for one kilogram of meat,’ he told reporters on Wednesday (20/5/2026).
One of the orders was for 500 besek to be used as meat containers for kurban. Regarding price, Jumini said that for per kodi or 20 pairs the price is Rp 65,000.
‘For the large size for five kilograms of meat, per pair (container and lid) is Rp 10,000,’ he said.
Jumini revealed that customers are not only from Bantul but also from outside the district, such as Sleman.
Jumini added that besides orders for besek for kurban meat containers, he also receives orders for besek for weddings. Consequently, Jumini says he has stopped taking orders since yesterday, Tuesday (19/5).
‘Yesterday there was an order of 400 small-sized besek for nasi megono after the Eid al-Adha prayer, but I could not manage it. Because of that, since yesterday I have stopped taking orders,’ he said.
Meanwhile, another besek craftsman in Kaliputih, Punikem (56), also reported being flooded with orders for besek to hold kurban meat. He noted that, in a day, he can complete about 40 besek.
‘The orders are abundant, and most are for sizes two to five kilograms. Those orders came in well before Eid al-Adha,’ he said.
