Bambang Died on 27 August Night, Investigation Ongoing
The Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, has requested that the public not be provoked by unverified information regarding the riots following demonstrations on 27 August 2026 in the Pejompongan area, Central Jakarta.
Yusril stated that the Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) are still investigating several incidents that occurred after the protest, including the death of a citizen named Bambang Setiawan and the assault of a Year 12 student named Faturrohman.
“Polda Metro Jaya is currently conducting an investigation into the death of Bambang and the assault of Faturrohman. No conclusion can yet be drawn regarding the perpetrators or the parties responsible for these two incidents,” Yusril said in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday (30/8).
According to him, investigations are ongoing to uncover the full sequence of events, including those who committed, ordered, or instigated the acts of violence.
“In-depth investigations are being conducted to reach a conclusion as to who ordered, who instigated, and who carried out the assault. For those proven responsible based on evidence, firm law enforcement measures will certainly be taken,” he said.
Yusril emphasised that law enforcement agencies have not yet concluded the involvement of any specific individuals, community groups, or mass organisations in the case.
This clarification follows various allegations on social media linking the unrest to specific groups or organisations.
“Law enforcement agencies are not accusing anyone involved in the assault, whether individuals, groups, or specific mass organisations. Therefore, I ask the public not to be easily provoked by unverified information,” said Yuscal.
He explained that the incident resulting in Bambang’s death and the assault on Faturrohman occurred after protesters had left the DPR Building area and during a situation of clashes between groups of residents in Pejompongan.
Consequently, Yusril requested that the public not use the case as a reason to carry out retaliatory actions or new acts of violence.
“I invite all components of society to remain calm. I am grateful to and appreciate the protesters who came from Pati and other regions, as well as the students who conducted demonstrations peacefully,” said Yusril.
He expressed hope that authorities would soon obtain sufficient evidence and facts to uncover the perpetrators and process those proven to have committed criminal acts in accordance with the law.
“We must not allow this ongoing investigation to trigger further riots or violence. Let us leave the process to the law enforcement agencies and let us work together to maintain public peace and order,” said Yusril.
