Balikpapan Police Destroy 1.09 kg of Methamphetamine, Claim to Have Saved Thousands of Lives
The Balikpapan Police in East Kalimantan destroyed 1.09 kilograms of methamphetamine on Wednesday (12/8), representing evidence from cases uncovered between June and 1 August 2026. The destruction of the illicit goods is part of an effort to break the chain of narcotics distribution within the Balikpapan Police jurisdiction.
Balikpapan Police Chief Senior Commissioner Jerrold HY Kumontoy, through Narcotics Unit Head AKP Firman Ernanto, stated that the case disclosures demonstrate the police force’s commitment to eradicating the illegal drug trade. Firman explained that the destroyed evidence had received a Decree on the Status of Seized Narcotics from the Head of the Balikpapan District Prosecutor’s Office. Prior to destruction, a portion of the evidence was set aside for forensic laboratory examination and court proceedings.
During the period from July to early August, the Balikpapan Police Narcotics Unit, together with the East Balikpapan Sector Police, handled 27 police reports. Of these, 23 cases were uncovered by the Narcotics Unit, while the remaining four were handled by the East Balikpapan Sector Police. From these 27 cases, police named 28 suspects, consisting of 26 men and two women.
Firman detailed that the total 1.09 kilograms of methamphetamine destroyed not only demonstrates the volume of evidence from enforcement actions but also represents a significant prevention effort. Police estimate the seizure prevented the narcotics from circulating and being consumed by thousands of people. Based on their calculations, the 1,096.99 grams of methamphetamine could potentially save approximately 10,970 lives from the dangers of drug abuse.
He noted that these figures illustrate how enforcement against narcotics distribution networks has a broader impact than simply arresting perpetrators. Every piece of narcotics evidence secured means it does not reach users. Drug eradication is also closely linked to efforts to protect the community, especially the younger generation. Firman emphasised that such efforts require support from various parties, and handling narcotics cannot rely solely on the police but also requires the involvement of local government, prosecutors, related institutions, families, schools, and the community.
Furthermore, he added that Balikpapan, as a strategic city in East Kalimantan, faces the challenge of maintaining the quality of its human resources amidst the development of the city and the Nusantara Capital City area. He concluded that narcotics eradication does not stop at the legal process against suspects or the destruction of evidence, but must also include prevention to stop narcotics from reaching new users, making this step a crucial part of breaking the distribution chain.
