Bali to host sustainability summit
JAKARTA: State Minister of the Environment Nabiel Makarim said on Wednesday the government planned to hold a national summit on sustainable development on June 5, 2003 in Bali.
Nabiel said the summit would be a follow up to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg, South Africa.
"The meeting is expected to be attended by President Megawati Soekarnoputri, Vice President Hamzah Haz, relevant Cabinet ministers, representatives of nine major groups including farmers, fishermen and workers," he told The Jakarta Post, Suara Pembaruan and Media Indonesia.
The President is in favor of the plan, according to him.
Nabiel said the summit would help determine the direction of sustainable development in the country, including the establishment of the National Council of Sustainable Development. --JP
