Bali to Get Kuta-Canggu Tram Line

Bali will soon have a mass transport tram line connecting Kuta with Canggu in North Kuta, Badung. The tram is planned to be built and operated by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and will run on a dedicated track yet to be constructed.

Badung Regent I Wayan Adi Arnawa stated that, alongside the toll road, building intercity rail connectivity is a priority as it will be far more effective. “So that people from anywhere who want to work in Badung or Denpasar, or live in Denpasar, can commute,” he said during a meeting with KAI directors on Wednesday (5/8/2026).

Rail-based transport infrastructure is considered a key solution to address development disparities and spur growth in new areas. An integrated connectivity system is believed to drive the local economy more evenly to remote areas. “A region will develop when it is connected to an already developed area. Imagine someone from Klungkung can live there, earn money in Denpasar, and spend it in Klungkung, so the economy keeps moving,” Adi Arnawa explained.

To support the tram’s operation, the Badung regency government has designed a plan to widen main roads and provide a dedicated lane. This is to ensure the public transport mode does not get stuck in traffic congestion. From a total road width of 24 metres, the local government will allocate space for a median, pavements, and building setback lines (GSB).

“If we build public transport without a dedicated lane, it will fail. My lesson is, once this 24-metre road is ready, I will take a 1-metre median, 2 metres on each side for pavements, and the 3-metre building setback line still applies,” Adi Arnawa clarified. In addition to preparing the road, the Badung regency government is also designing a park-and-ride concept by building integrated stations in strategic areas. This parking hub will serve as an integration point so private vehicle users can switch to the tram to reach their destinations.
