Bali: The Gateway for Indonesian DJs to the Global Stage
In recent years, Bali has gradually evolved into one of the most vibrant electronic music hubs in Asia. No longer just known as a tropical tourist destination, the island is now an integral part of the international nightlife and electronic dance music (EDM) scene.
Leading DJs such as Black Coffee, Peggy Gou, Fisher, Anyma, and Zedd now include Bali as one of their tour destinations in Asia. They have all performed at various venues on the Island of the Gods.
This development has brought about interesting changes for the Indonesian electronic music industry. If previously the international stage seemed distant for local DJs, Bali is now opening up new opportunities for Indonesian talent to perform alongside global stars.
The rise of Indonesian DJs on the international stage has been evident in recent years. Names like Whisnu Santika, Dipha Barus, and Bleu Clair have gained global attention through international festivals, cross-country collaborations, and releases on major international labels. Their presence has paved the way for more local talent to enter the global electronic music ecosystem.
Now, a new generation of Indonesian DJs is also starting to gain exposure through major events in Bali. One such name is Echobee, a young Indonesian DJ who performed as the opening act for Zedd at Savaya Bali on June 20, 2025.
For many in the electronic music industry, performing as an opening act for international artists is more than just performing on a big stage. It is also a form of validation that the quality of local performers is increasingly able to compete with international standards.
Echobee’s performance with Zedd is one of the important milestones in his career. Previously, he has also performed with several other international DJs such as DubVision, Ben Nicky, Sam Feldt, Andrew Rayel, Maddix, Fedde Le Grand, and Bleu Clair at various venues and electronic music events in Indonesia.
In addition to being an active performer, Echobee is also starting to build his musical identity as an electronic music producer. He has released several original tracks such as ‘No Clue’ through Level1 Music Label New York and ‘Feel Alright’ through Strichly Record Label Ibiza. He is also actively releasing edits and remixes on digital platforms such as SoundCloud.
This shows how the new generation of Indonesian DJs is now moving beyond being just resident DJs, but also as electronic music artists with their own unique style and music. The release of music on international labels is one indicator that the quality of Indonesian electronic music producers is starting to receive wider attention.
Bali now plays an important role in this development. With the increasing number of international events held on the island, opportunities for local DJs to perform in front of a global audience are becoming more open. In many ways, Bali is now not only a global entertainment destination, but also a new gateway for Indonesian DJs to the international stage.
This development shows that the Indonesian electronic music industry is moving towards a more mature stage. Local DJs are no longer just part of the domestic scene, but are starting to find a place in a wider global conversation. For young Indonesian DJs, this momentum is a great opportunity to show that local talent is now increasingly able to stand side by side and share the stage with global stars. (H-2)
